A message from the author

Why I wrote this book.

The goal of this book is to help you read the Greek of the New Testament (NT) deeply by harnessing the latest research in linguistics. More specifically, I want you to be able to read the Greek NT quickly and easily, understand what you read as the original audience would have understood it, and describe the grammar in accurate ways.

As a higher-level goal, this book attempts to bring the world of linguistics to the world of NT Greek grammatical studies. I have sought to take the best, most influential theories of language and apply them to the study of NT Greek. Ultimately, the hope is that this will make for better exegetes of the text.

Perspectives on the textbook

Thoughts on the book from the classroom, the world of biblical studies, and the world of applied linguistics.

Instructors of modern languages seem to know or, at least, put into practice something that most ancient language instructors do not: fluency is best achieved through immersion and repetition. For those shaped by years of learning and teaching through the grammar-translation approach, the transition to active language learning can seem prohibitively difficult. With the publication of this textbook, that excuse no longer exists. Linguistically informed and aimed at generating fluency rather than exegesis alone, Kevin Grasso's Reading Greek Deeply is the perfect companion to Biblingo. I recommend it heartily to any students and especially teachers of Greek who are seeking to bridge the gap between living-language approaches and traditional grammar instruction.

This is a fantastic resource and an innovative way to learn Greek and read with real fluency rather than merely decoding with various scholarly aids. The interspersed exegetical sections are also of value on their own even beyond the demonstration of methods, making robust and sometimes novel cases for strong readings, though not all will agree with every conclusion. Highly recommended.

This book provides a detailed and linguistically informed course in NT Greek grammar, supplemented with discussions of relevant concepts from second language acquisition and linguistics. The book models an integrated approach to linguistics and Biblical studies, illustrating some of the ways in which each tradition can benefit from the insights of the other.
