Verb: Complementizers & verbal constructions
Complementizers & verbal constructions is a verb topic in Koine (biblical) Greek. This page gathers its forms, paradigms, and function, drawn from the lessons of Reading Greek Deeply.
SyntaxVerb – Complementizers & verbal constructions
Verbal constructions refer to two verbs that describe a single eventuality where one of the verbs contributes information about the eventuality that the other verb does not, i.e. each verb refers to different aspects of that eventuality. For verbs of movement, we might combine a verb that gives the idea of change of location with another verb that gives the manner of motion (see Syntax B for further discussion): We can see this in an example like
- (374) Verbal construction with result and manner of motion verbs
- ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν (Matt 14:25)
- He went to them walking on the sea
