Verb: Aorist -μι
Aorist -μι is a verb topic in Koine (biblical) Greek. This page gathers its forms, paradigms, and function, drawn from the lessons of Reading Greek Deeply.
MorphologyVerb – Aorist -μι
- Aorist -μι verbs do not reduplicate like Luo, e.g. ~~δίδ~~ ωμι
- The endings are identical to Elusa except that a κ replaces the σ (similar, but not identical to, Leluka, which has a reduplication rather than the augment)
- Because ἀφίημι is a particle verb (ἀπό + ἵημι), the augment goes between the two morphemes; since the ι comes from the reduplicated μι verb in the present, the forms end up as ἀφέηκα → ἀφῆκα
- ἵστημι has two Aorists (both drop the ι when combined with the augment):
| Singular | Plural | |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Person | ἔ-δω-κα | ἐ-δώ-καμεν |
| 2nd Person | ἔ-δω-κας | ἐ-δώ-κατε |
| 3rd Person | ἔ-δω-κε(ν) | ἔ-δω-καν |
| Verb | Aorist Form |
|---|---|
| τίθημι | ἔθηκα (behaves just like δίδωμι) |
| ἀφίημι | ἀφῆκα (no ι) |
| ἵστημι | ἔστησα (takes direct object) ἔστην (‘coming to standstill’) |
| ἕστηκα (perfect form: ‘standing’) |
