MorphologyMorphology: Noun – 3rd Declension -ος

  • In the nom/acc sg, the stem ends in -ος (don’t confuse with 2nd declension nom masc sg), while in all other forms it ends in -ες
  • The final σ of the -ες drops out, and the remaining ε contracts with the vowel of the ending:
  • In the gen and dat sg and gen pl, the vowels contract like ε-contract verbs (see 25.2.3.1), e.g. σκεύεσ-ος → σκεύε-ος → σκεύους
  • In the nom/acc pl, the remaining εα contracts to η, e.g. σκεύεσ-α → σκεύε-α → σκεύη
  • In the dat pl, the ending does not begin with a vowel, so after the σ drops out the ending attaches normally
